Matt Miller trained at The College of Executive Coaching, located in Pismo Beach, California. Attendance at this prestigious coaching college is exclusive only to professionals already holding a Masters Degree in the social sciences. This exclusivity separates BCC’s from other self-proclaimed coaches who might only be experienced in certain business administration environments and modalities.

Matt Miller uses a proprietary coaching process that is heavily influenced by cognitive behavioral theory. His coaching philosophy was naturally shaped by his many years of providing group and individual psychotherapy to clients in highly stressful and sometimes desperate situations. His unique counseling background has positioned him to be highly effective with coaching executives, business owners, and many other high achieving, competitive professionals. Matt Miller has been asked to speak at multiple corporate events from West Palm Beach, Florida to Laguna Beach, California.

The Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) named Matt Miller a founding Board Certified Coach (BCC) in 2012. The CCE created this credential as a means to independently verify that applicants have met professional coaching competency standards established by the CCE and subject matter experts. These standards reflect the common knowledge, skills, and abilities of a professional coach.

The BCC is a mark of quality. It demonstrates to the public that a professional coach has:

  • Met educational and training requirements
  • Passed a coach-specific examination
  • Obtained experience in the field of coaching
  • Professional peer references
  • Accountability to an enforceable ethics code
  • Commitment to continuing education

The achievement of the Board Certified Coach credential solidifies the professional identity of the coach. The BCC credential is attractive to professionals who would like to provide independent third-party verification that they have achieved certain coaching competency standards.

Significant Professional Influence on the Field of Psychology

As a recovery coach and addiction counselor, Matt Miller made a significant contribution to the development of the fifth edition of the DSM by participating directly in testing the feasibility and clinical utility of the proposed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria among patients in his private, clinical practice. Miller’s input helped the DSM-5 Task Force and Workgroups to refine and revise the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and develop the strongest manual possible for clinicians and patients.

As a recovery coach, performance coach, and full-time, licensed professional counselor, the Field Trials proved to be a highly demanding and challenging study for Mr. Miller and his support staff. These Field Trials reflected an historic landmark as the first time practicing clinicians (i.e. recovery coaching, addiction counseling, etc.) were invited to participate in the Field Trials, which were previously carried out only by academic investigators.

As a DSM-5 Collaborating Investigator and practicing clinician who works extensively in the recovery coaching and addiction counseling field, Matt Miller was required to concurrently complete extensive training required for the successful conduct of the Field Trials as well as show keen attention to detail to execute the study and carry out the informed consent processes, electronic data collection, and implementation and testing of the newly proposed diagnostic criteria and measures under the time pressures and stresses of his recovery coaching and performance coaching practice.

Because of his contribution to the DSM-5, Matt Miller is forever recognized and listed in the DSM-5 as a “DSM-5 Field Trials Collaborating Investigator.”
